Closest Coleen Rooney came to leaving Wayne as she refused to put on a show

Coleen Rooney once came close to dumping her husband and ending their rocky marriage.

In 2017, the mum-of-four said she refused to “put on a show” and thought she’d be “fine on her own” if she ended their union.

She made the statement about their marriage on Facebook after Wayne was convicted of drink driving, in another woman’s car.

Coleen had written: “It didn’t feel right wearing my ring, I see it as a sign of commitment and I was unsure what was happening.

“I don’t always wear my ring day to day, especially when I go the gym which is where I get stalked by paps each morning.

“So, if I don’t always have it on, maybe it’s just because am going the gym or haven’t put it on before the school run!!

“A few people have been feeling sorry for me, please don’t.

“I appreciate getting cared about, however, I am a strong person, I don’t feel sorry for myself.

“Also a few people are probably thinking am stupid for staying in my marriage. I am not stupid, I know my own mind and it’s something I want to try and work on.”

She added: “Before the headlines start…. No, I’m not taking Wayne back as he’s never left.

“Yes, it has been a s**t time, and yes, time was spent apart and I thought my marriage might have been at an end.

“There’s been so many stories in the press, so many sources chipping in, so-called friends having their say and a few well-known names giving their opinion.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion on things, I often do. However please make an opinion based on true facts.

“I am in the public eye and do expect to get intrusion, however, the amount we have received has been uncalled for.

“Remember we are people, we have feelings, and as I always say to my children…. don’t do or say to others what you wouldn’t like done or said to yourself or your loved ones. Also, I really hope the money that people got paid for their say has really benefited both you and your families.”

Wayne has been caught up in a number of scandals in the past, including visiting prostitutes when he was a teenager and in the early days of his relationship with Coleen.

After the news broke, Wayne issued an apology, calling himself “young and stupid”, and in her autobiography, Coleen confessed she was devastated, but said it had happened before their relationship became serious.

In 2010 it was reported that he had been seeing a £1,200-a-night prostitute, with their last encounter occurring in October 2009, a month before their eldest son’s birth.

The following year, he reportedly had a threesome with that prostitute and another sex worker, with Coleen forgiving him when the news came out.

Then in 2017, when Coleen was pregnant again, Wayne was arrested for drink-driving after being pulled over by officers following a boozy night out, driving party girl Laura Simpson in her car.

He later pleaded guilty and was banned from driving for two years and ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work.

In her statement, issued that same year, Coleen defended her reasons for staying in the marriage.

She continued: “Wayne doesn’t get portrayed for the person he is in the press, he has always had a hard time. I’m not going to list his good qualities as a person as I don’t think he deserves it at this time but one thing is that he is a brilliant dad.

“He’s made silly and selfish mistakes, some he’s learnt from, some obviously not. However maybe that will change?

“In life, you don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. But one thing I do know is that too much alcohol on a night out is a dangerous and a lot of stupid mistakes are made and things are said under the influence.

“I would never trust ANYONE who has had a lot of alcohol, it changes some people drastically.

“I do have a private life and we are real people which is sometimes overlooked. We do have worries, troubles and obstacles in life we tackle and go through without anyone knowing and we also have fantastic fun times making memories with our loved ones without people knowing.

“To answer a lot of people, not everything in our life is money related. People think when you earn a lot of money everything is fine, yes there are advantages, but this isn’t everything in life and it’s doesn’t always make people happy.

“People are everything, and people are what make me the happiest in life. We surround ourselves with friends and family who are genuine, kind and caring people.

“It’s my decision …. do I love Wayne? … yes I do. If I didn’t then I wouldn’t be trying to make it work. I know I would be fine on my own, with just me and my children, but I don’t want to live like that, I want to try and continue our marriage and live as a family, because that’s what I want to do.

“I’m not saying everything is fine and forgotten about, but we are as good as can be at this point.

“I’m not the type of person to put a show on and say we’re all loved-up….I’m just real.”

Coleen and Wayne have been together since they were kids, have been married since 2008 and are parents to four boys: Kai, 11, Klay, eight, Kit, five, and three-year-old Cass.

Earlier this month, Wayne was pictured sleeping fully clothed in a hotel room chair in snaps taken by women he had partied with.

The photos quickly went viral on social media.

There is no suggestion that Wayne or the women acted inappropriately.

Three women who took the photos of Wayne have apologised to the star and handed him the copyright of the images for just £1.

Speaking immediately after his team Derby’s pre-season friendly with Real Betis, Wayne made an apology to his family about the images, saying: “I made a mistake. I went to a private party with two of my friends.

“From me, I would like to apologise to my family and the club for the images which were going round.

“I want to move forward on this. I’m grateful to Derby County for giving me this opportunity to get this club back to where it belongs.

“I will do everything in my power to do that.”

Wayne was then quizzed on whether he felt the victim in the episode, and he replied: “Yes, but I don’t really want to go into that. Listen, it’s dealt with and I’m looking forward to moving forward and preparing for another game on Sunday.”
